I had the privilege of capturing the sweetest backyard wedding in Des Moines this year. Tyren & Celaysa said their vows in front of the hollyhocks in her mom’s gorgeous yard with just their families present. The next day they had a reception and invited all their friends. They made it completely their own and it was beautiful. The happy tears barely stopped! (Also how gorgeous is their cake??)

Wedding days are so much fun to document but there’s no milestone that compares to becoming parents. It introduces new levels of suffering and joy. Both of which are needed for life to feel richer and more fulfilling in every way. 🤍

I’m mostly photographing a wedding for the couple as they are now. But I can’t help but capture photographs for who they’ll be one day. I will always include photos that will matter even more in 20 years, even if they’re not perfectly composed or well lit. And that’s really the whole point of having a big wedding. It’s likely the only day in your entire life that everyone you love most is in one place. It’s my goal to make it count.

Every time folks revisit their gallery, I hope a new photo stops them in their tracks. Multiple generations together, a tiny nephew holding his lovey, hugs and kisses from family, tears spilling from people who aren’t prone to crying, or parents and grandparents smiling ear to ear on the dance floor.

And most importantly, you simply don’t know what the future holds. For two of my couples, a parent died before I’d even finished the gallery. Another couple got married while their dad was in the final stages of dementia. The longer I do this work, the more of my heart I seem to invest. It’s the honor of my life to capture the best photo someone has of a loved one at the end of their life. I care deeply about your current joy and I care even more deeply about what these photos will mean in the future. 🤍

Brandi & Charlie’s wedding day at The Monroe in Des Moines was an absolute dream. From the stunning venue, their tear filled first look, pre-ceremony nerves, their incredible friends, and their reception, it was what the best wedding days are made of.

It might not be great to admit, but the more I photograph the same family, the better the photos turn out. My artistic brain clicks into higher gear when it’s not also navigating the social aspect of a shoot.
